I haven't really cooked since I got back from vacation, although I've made salad AND washed my dishes TWO NIGHTS RUNNING. Feels good. Another 19 days of this and I'll have a habit.

However, here, for [livejournal.com profile] raithen and anyone else suffering a heatwave (not me alas), is a recipe for the most incredible iced tea I've ever tasted. It comes courtesy of my friend Kelly and I made it on Tuesday night.

Steep the following for 5 minutes:
  • 6 teabags (I used Twining's Earl Grey)

  • 3 cups hot water

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • Pinch of nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp ground clove
Remove the teabags and cinnamon sticks. Add:
  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons' worth)
Refrigerate. Dilute to taste with about 1 part water to 2 parts tea mixture; serve over lots of ice.

YUM!

Thankfully, it has been unseasonably cool in Chicago, but I'll keep this recipe handy. It sounds wonderful!

Sounds yummy, but complicated. Think I'll have a beer instead.

Cinnamon sticks...

Mmm. Yummy! Where do you buy cinnamon sticks? I'd like to try this when the next heat wave hits... (crosses fingers, hoping for a sunny weekend...)

YOu send me your rain (we need it -- there are forest fires out here) and I'll send you the hot, sunny weather.

Deal?

It is really refreshing.

Incidentally I used Earl Grey teabags as that's what I had. Kelly did likewise.

The spices are amazing. I'm not used to thinking of cold liquids as smelling of anything much, but this smells wonderful.

I got mine at Provigo in a hermetically sealed plastic bag. Dull, but effective.

I bet the grocery store at the Atwater Market has them though, and that would be MUCH more fun.

What I find interesting is when I travel to the US and unsweetened ice tea is the norm there, whereas here you specifically have to ask for "rude" ice tea as its called in Canada.

do it w/o the lemon, mix 1/2 iced tea mix, 1/2 milk/soy/rice milk = iced chai

Yes, I've noticed that (although I didn't know we had a special term for it!)

I like this recipe b/c the sugar balances the lemon juice and tannin perfectly. (Also, adding the sugar while it's hot means the sugar dissolves much more easily than if you try and sweeten the unsweetened stuff.)

beer good, BUT. . .

Right with you on the beer, so less of the "Boys", girls. ;) Btw, I'd recommend to "dilute to taste" with rum or vodka, not water.
