But I won't be getting it. Well, maybe later.

Slept in Friday (blissful!) and drove to Toronto through pouring rain about half the time. Met [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl in Bakka and spent money I don't have on I Dare and Coraline -- both excellent. (I'm really enjoying Perdido Street Station, but it's something I need to take in small doses as it's very, very dense. What steampunk was meant to be.) We met [livejournal.com profile] mindrobber for dinner and then went to see The Italian Job. Which I enjoyed -- it's frothy and silly and has pretty cars and pretty clothes and pretty people, and heist movies are just fun. But I think one viewing is enough. Met [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl's stepsister for a drink after, which was nice.

Saturday I went online and decided to run a full virus scan on my dad's computer because it was doing strange things (like ignoring Javascript, even though it was enabled, and let me tell you the Symantec site is NOT easy to navigate if your computer isn't dealing with Javascript). Turned out to be fine, but I foresee an irate call for tech support some time in my future when he starts using it again.

Drove up to the cottage in time for a late lunch -- my aunt and uncle on my dad's side were there for the weekend, which was cool. And the rest of the weekend was a good cottage weekend, with:

ducks
tennis
swimming
kayaking
family sing-song
stubborn fireplace
sailing in near-flat calm
geese
fishermen
canoeing
not enough sun
rereading The G-String Murders
old photos
water lilies
tea and cookies
giant splashing sounds at night
lots of food
dishes

Drove home yesterday by back roads as far as Newcastle -- still miles of cars coming the other direction. The 7A crosses a lake at a narrow point near Port Perry, and there are always rows of people lining the bridge with their fishing rods. In fact the wire above them holds a curtain of dead fishhooks and floats and lines.

Abbreviated rants:

Having driven approximately 1000 km in the last 4 days I am in a good position to inform you that half the rock DJs in southern Ontario and upper New York State (plus or minus 5%, 19 times out of 20) are drooling, easily manipulated, sycophantic morons. Does Madonna know her audience or what? This from one:

"How about those MTV Music Video Awards? I bet you there were a lot of VCRs this weekend rewinding and pausing and rewinding and pausing and rewinding and..."

The Incident I Refuse To Name Here was a publicity stunt, guys. Guess what? It worked! You're still talking about it 5 days after the fact! Get over it already! I'm sick of hearing about it!

Moving on, to those who say "I'm not a bigot or a prude, but I believe gay marriage is just wrong": yes, actually, you are. I'm sorry to break it to you. And about that marriage-is-for-children argument: I'd buy it if they were actually, you know, central to the marriage vows or anything, but as I recall the (Christian) marriage service deals a lot more with having and holding in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse, from this day forward as long as ye both shall live. And taking the "it's for the kids!" argument to its logical conclusion, should we then exclude postmenopausal women, men with vasectomies, women with tubal ligations or hysterectomies, the otherwise infertile, and people who just plain don't want children from marriage as well?

Um. Back to work, I guess.
