ok, I know, it's not really the Burgess Shale, it's "the birds that share this lonely view" or something like that. I can't help it.

Some whiny alt-rock crap that was way popular about 8 years ago or so, with a chorus I always mis-hear as "the Burgess Shale".

I thought of you on the weekend, we were studying a satellite photo of Lake Simcoe (where our cottage is) and points north, i.e. Muskoka (on the eastern shore of Lake Huron), which is all wrinkled up like elephant skin -- what causes the swirly bits?

Oh. It's the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I knew that.

ah ha! I thought that was what the song was!

As for the Land Sat view of the cottage, without looking at it I could only hazard a guess, but it may be the suture zone related to the Grenville Orogeny??? 1.1 billion years ago.. the mountain building event that made the Adirondack mountains... but then again, our part of the continent has been smashed so many times it could be anything, really. :-)

Sadly, the only version I could find online (http://www.fedpubs.com/maps/map_pix/georgian_bg.jpg) looks like crap. Ah well. Thanks!

looks like folds and faults to me... ancient suture zone, probably not Grenville, maybe older. Will look into it, 'cause I'm a geek :-)
