...originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] mrdankelly's journal but now available to a wider audience! Because I don't know, and I'm curious.

Do you have any equivalent of Elections Canada down there?

I ask because the notion of an individual electoral district designing its own ballot still, after 3 and a bit years, blows my mind. I found the Federal Elections Commission, but that seems to the casual eye to deal specifically with finance, not with running elections in general. (Also, their web designer should be shot. But that's another matter.)

Are all federal elections run at the local level? Or how does it work?

they are run at the state level, that is, under state law. the process is run by local elected officials, however, such as a Registrar of Voters and voting sites are staffed with paid "volunteers" usually an equal number from each major political party, namely the "half wits" and "dim bulbs"

Well, the question is somewhat flawed. Technically there aren't any Federal elections here. You vote for a slate of electors pledged to vote for your presidential candidate of choice. (Some states allow the electors to change their minds after the votes are cast -- one day we'll have a coup d'etat in this country based on that fact.)

Wow. That seems very complicated.

How about Congress and Senate elections?

Ah. This seems a bit open to abuse...
