electricland: (Snape shut up cleolinda)
First meeting today to discuss the Giant Script (of Doom). We didn't get very far, but at least the responsibility is no longer mine. I feel really bad for them. OTOH, they feel really bad for me having to write the thing. So it works out.

Also, I sent two documents explaining What I Think We Should Do to my boss. (Actually, one of them was "How I interpret my notes about what the rest of us think of what you think we should do." But it was a PowerPoint presentation, so that counts extra.) So far so good -- we'll discuss them some time this week. Something I am finding hard to adjust to in this job is that we seldom just decide what we are going to do, then do it. Mostly, we decide that the problem under discussion is an important issue and we should have a meeting next week to discuss it. This drives me somewhat bonkers (or binkers -- finally picked up Hat Full of Sky! whee!). It may be overcritical of me, but I can't see where endless meetings are a good or productive thing. (I finally see where all those jokes and cartoons are coming from.) So I tend to be a little pushier than I normally would about trying to nail people down -- I want to know what we're going to do. And when. And who's going to do it. And when they'll be finished. You know, boring details like that. (One of the programmers stopped by my office to thank me for running the meeting yesterday, so I guess she appreciated it even if I felt I was being way too pushy.)

Partly, of course, it's a function of our project manager being on mat leave -- I'll have to get used to picking up the slack. And partly it's a function of our boss being great on vision, not so much on implementation and follow-through; we are all still adjusting to this, learning that we just have to grab what he wants us to do as it floats past and figure out a way to make it happen for ourselves. In some ways that's very freeing. (And I shouldn't exaggerate. He does follow up; I think he just expects us to take the initiative more than we have been.)

Poll results (voting is still open if you want to make a liar out of me): Consensus favours "In like a lion, out like a lamb" quite heavily. The first part is certainly holding true today, so we'll hope for the best on the second. Although there is a strong minority vote for "Either," which suggests that those of you that didn't get a foot of snow dumped on you today are in for a surprise in four weeks.

While the majority felt that the saying (whatever it is) was a meaningless saying invented by people with too much time on their hands, "a threat" was also heavily favoured in early voting. However, the more hopeful "promise" came from behind to finish a strong second. I don't know about you, but I find this comforting.

18 out of 23 of us are looking forward to spring, suggesting that five of you are not. Intriguing. Do you prefer winter, or are you just in despair? The fact that four people believe spring is never coming suggests that it may be the latter. Everyone else thinks it will show up -- most likely when it's good and ready, with a minority opting for the more cautious "this year."

Gonna plan out the rest of my week and then brave the snow.
