Work geekiness
Mar. 11th, 2005 07:51 pmI keep forgetting how much I love, love, love structural editing. I've been having a lovely time going back and forth through the site, muttering "well THAT makes no sense!" and "why are these two separate pages?" and "we could perfectly well break this section out, shift these over here, line them up -- ooh, and we could bring this in from over here and they'll make a nice little set!" It's extra fun because I'm working from a set of 9-month-old notes from the last time anyone sat down and thought about this project, and none of the people (except my boss) are here to ask about things any more. It's like archaeology!
But I think I've come up with a good solution that will -- heavens! -- actually make sense to people who are visiting the site for the first time (as opposed to people who can read the mind of whoever produced the outline for this thing in the first place and said "That's how we do things in these parts! I don't care if it doesn't make sense! When they figure it out, they will grow to love it!" Um... no).
Now, granted, a lot of what I've been doing today has come at the expense of about 9000 other things I should be doing -- but it's SO much fun and will (if I can talk my boss into it) make things SO much better. Really, there is no reason for an information architecture this crappy and unusable. (As a bonus, I'm getting lots of practice with Illustrator.)
In a nice piece of synergy, one of the programmers came by this afternoon -- she was all concerned that, in modifying the interface, they had managed to completely bugger up one of the other sites because there were SO MANY PAGES that repeated and didn't say anything new. I was able to assure her that no, somebody had actually planned it that way. She looked horrified and said "We have to change that!"
Already on it... hee.
