"Google plebiscite"

[livejournal.com profile] makinglight has just provided a name for a concept I didn't even realize was in need of one, although looking back it seems quite obvious. (Note that someone else may have come up with the name earlier, but this is the first time I've seen it.)

Oh ye gods, do I really write for a living? Let me try that again. No. Let me quote:

Patrick Nielsen Hayden ::: (view all by) ::: May 24, 2005, 06:21 PM:

Well, it's "into the breach" in the St Crispin's Day speech in Henry V. Yeah, what did that Shakespeare guy know? We can run a Google plebescite:

"into the breech" -- 295,000 results

"into the breach" -- 9,270,000 results
(The spelling of "plebiscite" is corrected further down in the comments.)

I have been running parallel Google searches to check on the relative frequency of two possible terms for years, and never thought of naming the procedure, or even considered that it needed a name. But of course it does, and of course it has one. Perfection.
