What is the etymology of "doughnut"?

One of my officemates just suggested that it should be "doughnought", i.e. "a nought made out of dough". I said this was ridiculous. He pointed out that "a nut made out of dough" is just as ridiculous and his way is at least logical. I said we were talking about the English language here. He said that is true. Now we are both puzzled. Canadian Oxford Dictionary provides no help. Only you can save us!

Hello all,

Today we had for lunch udon noodle soup with a garnish of shrimp, sweet potato, cauliflower and onion tempura. Dan was off with his father conveying his grandmother.

John spent the morning at the drawing board, pouring over the electrical code. Yesterday, he installed three-way switch wiring in the stairwells. He says that he thinks the wiring process will speed up--but he's not sure.

David and Dan hung the door in the second floor bathroom. So, R, you have a door--but no walls.

Jen sent an update on The Plan. I think I'll only issue updates say twice a week--or on an emergency basis. Too much paper. OK by you all?
I myself had lunch in Nathan Phillips Square, listening to the Irie Festival. I also picked up A Suitable Boy, which will break my wrists for sure.

The Globe's Real Estate section said today that the fixer-upper is now beyond the means and inclination of the average first-time home buyer, proving yet again that J and I are so very, very far from average I'm not even sure we can see it from where we're standing. I laughed quite a lot on the streetcar.

J has begun emailing me a copy of the Globe's online Sudoku, to complement the paper one, which I do every morning... enabler.
electricland: (Alice - huh?)
Cousin J just phoned to tell me she saw Cara Pifko on King Street. She couldn't place her at first (do I know her? should I say Hi?). Sounds like she handled it in considerably cooler fashion than I would ("OMG I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE BACK FOR ANOTHER SEASON! Also, that Alice finally got laid! Oops, that was my outside voice, wasn't it?").
electricland: (Sigh no more)
I've been incorporating edits in the script that was taking me forever last winter, and you know what? It's pretty good. Long, though. I can see why it took forever.

Also, the occasional comment of "Great section!" from the reviewer is making me all happy.

So, off for the [long] weekend. See you all Tuesday!
