Thank you all for your kind comments yesterday. I went to see Granny after work (expecting the worst, which we'd been told might well be imminent), but she was alert and cheerful and good things like that. They admitted her finally, and kicked my mum out at 8 p.m. (no visitors later than that, except in special cases which apparently we're not). No news yet this morning, but I'm choosing to be hopeful.

Dear Science:

Really, lighten up. It would not kill you to make your abstracts available for free. Other journals do it and don't seem to be suffering. Charge for the full text by all means, but honestly, what is the good of offering an emailed table of contents if all I can read is the title?
