back to normal
Feb. 12th, 2007 11:08 amThe English are on their way to New York. Jen and I drove them to Niagara Falls yesterday -- we had a really nice day out, stopped in Niagara-on-the-Lake to admire the tourist tat (fudge!) and buy icewine and eat lunch at the Angel Inn, then at the butterfly conservatory to remind ourselves that spring will come again. The falls were pretty amazing. As Judi said, it's almost better to see them in winter; if you saw them in summer, they'd look just like the million pictures of them you've seen before. Winter is different.
We also went up to the Fallsview casino and admired from up above. (Didn't go into the casino proper but the mall is like Vegas, only less so. But with fudge.) Tried to get back to our car by walking south along the escarpment. Decided that really wasn't going to work. Walked all the way back. It was getting dark at that point so we drove to the hostel the girls had found in the Lonely Planet, which proved to be open and accepting guests, and then past the train station (basically so I could reassure myself it was still there). We then ate a huge meal at an Italian restaurant and drove past the Falls one more time in case they were lit up (they were). Then dropped the girls off at their hostel and drove home (with a detour through Winona for a bathroom and tea break). I've never made the trip so fast -- Sunday night in the middle of winter is definitely the time to be on the QEW.
Totally missed the excitement on the US side, too. Funny, we weren't tempted at ALL to climb over the edge.
In any case, as I say, they should be on the train now and over the border any time. The house feels quite empty already! They were wonderful guests. I've really only seen them about three times in twenty years, and I'm glad we got on so well.
