Virtue rewarded
Jul. 14th, 2004 01:22 pmDecided that ice cream would be just the job after leaving work (lunch was not altogether adequate because I was out of mini yogurts), so turned right instead of left and walked up to Ripples, which is, of course, right next door to S.W. Welch. So since I can't resist a used bookstore I walked in and headed straight for the mystery section where, by some miracle, THEY HAD BUSMAN'S HONEYMOON!
I grabbed it (I don't think I squeaked, because nobody looked round, but I definitely gasped) and took it to the cash, where I explained to the nice man that I had been looking for this for months. Then I went next door and bought a scoop of chai and a scoop of mocha walnut fudge in a sugar cone and sat on the bench outside and read my new book and ate ice cream.
(This is the first time I've read it since I was about 16, and definitely the first time since I've read Gaudy Night. It was always good, but it works even better in sequence. I'm also getting many more of the allusions, although some of the ones in French still baffle me.)
Then got the 144 to Atwater and Sherbrooke and walked the rest of the way home, stopping at the grocery store. Made ersatz chicken marsala with fettucine and salad. Drank the rest of the white wine. Phoned
