In 2003 I resolved to:

Get to work by 9
Hah. Not so far. Still an ambition though.

Leave work at a reasonable hour, say 6:30 at the latest, unless there's some real emergency
Better... unless doing site updates. There have been a few emergencies. By and large I think my early nights are more due to apathy than to efficiency, but I'll take what I can get.

Cook at least 4 times a week
Not quite, but cooking lots -- enough that I've only eaten out or ordered in about 3 times this month, not counting outings with friends and colleagues. So we'll count this one as good progress.

Bring my lunch to work at least 4 times a week
Check. Clear victory there. Woohoo!

Go to the gym or otherwise exercise at least 3 times a week
Errr... not so far. At all. Joining this week though, and hopefully will be playing badminton with Sara.

Stringently limit the time I spend screwing around on the web, say 1 hour a day max
Again, not so much. Better there too though, a bit, if only because I've gotten busier.

Call or otherwise communicate with my friends and family at least once a month
Some yes, some no. Will continue to work on this.

Check my voicemail every day, and answer messages immediately
Mostly pretty good with this. Having to have the plain dialtone for the modem has helped a lot.

Shed those opinions of myself and others that I cling to from habit rather than conviction
Mystical, aren't we? So-so on this one, I guess. Wonder what I was thinking of in particular?

Take a pottery course or other creative outlet that doesn't have anything to do with words
Does CPR count? Missed the pottery course deadline which is unfortunate, because I'd really made up my mind to do it... then I got busy. Still, there's 11 months of the year left. And I can always start drawing again.

Honour my commitments
Don't think I've made too many yet...

Face my irrational fears
I think we can all agree that the irrational fears are still going strong. Oh dear.

Talk to strangers
Somewhat... hey, book club meeting, that was good...

Find somewhere to volunteer, and do it
Nope, not yet. Need to decide whether this is a priority.

Spend money only on things I truly want
Hm, doing not badly. A little backsliding maybe, but on the whole not bad. Accounts tomorrow so I'll see how I've been doing.

Tell people I love them more often
...not really. Although I complimented Negin last night which was good...

Go to Scotland
yeah, working on it! really!

Visit Heidi & Rock (March?), Zac & Christine, Siobhain & James
Hm. Need to call Heidi and make plans. Would be nice to find cheap airfare.

Look for a job that lets me contribute something more important to the world than just helping multinational pharmacos make more money
Not yet, and this IS a priority.

Do The Artist's Way with Kate
Started, but fell right down. Not good. Need to get back up again.

Start an online book club with Kate, Joanna, others? (OK this doesn't square well with the fewer-words resolution, but contradiction is so delicious)
Again, not yet... if they're still interested I'm willing to give it a go though.

Keep my apartment clean
Well, sort of. I really need to vacuum.

Give a party
Not yet. I have 11 months. Give me a chance.

Go to the tam-tam
yeah, that there's a summer resolution.

OK, so what's been working and what hasn't? Clearly I need to get to bed earlier and set a schedule for housecleaning. Keeping track of significant dates, bills due etc. on a wall calendar as well as an agenda has been very good. I need to make a list of the 3-6 things that I REALLY want to spend time on in the next 6 months (what Cheryl Richardson calls an Absolute Yes List) and concentrate on those. Also reasons for same.

Actually not doing too too badly. Frequent checkups should help.

Unrelated babble :D

1) Um, so ON topic, pretty good, all in all with those resolutions.

2) The Virginian is a derivative, boring and poorly written film. Most of the horse cinematography was stolen DIRECTLY from the Man from Snowy River . THe story line was a) nearly impossible to follow on one front though I am exhausted and *MAY* just have been having trouble following it. But still and b) a ridiculously predictable love story on the other front. Finally, THOSE POOR HORSES. THey must have no mouths left after all those people yanked on them. With curb bits in to boot. *GGGRRRRRRR.* Cinematography was kinda pretty (gotta love the Alberta Foothills out of Calgary standing in for Wyoming *eyeroll*), though. If derivative. (see above ;))

3) 5 people in my department are very close to defending their theses. I am, of course, staying calm and collected about this, and WILL NOT panic because I will soon be the old fogey hanger on student. *HYPERVENTILATING* *breathing. deeply*. *Calmness prevails*

Ok. To bed. Happy first aiding tomorrow, Ms. Know-it-all. ;)

1) Thanks!

2) Oh dear. Unfortunate. (Hey, at least it's not like the horses in Two Towers, who had to gallop down a 45° hill into an army of pike-wielding Orcs... I don't care if the pikes weren't properly seated, that had to've hurt.)

3) NO PANICKING. What did you tell me about the stupid upstart schoolmate the other day? Well then. You don't have to compete with ANYBODY except yourself. (Remember, later than others or not, you will have a dissertation and a big fat degree at the end of it all, which is more than most of us have. You have NO reason to panic.) Besides, what do you care about other people's stupid timetables anyway?

You will be FINE.

1) Makes me think maybe it's time for me to do my new year's resolutions. I don't like rushing into these things.

2) The Virginian--bleh. Shouldn't have been remade, obviously. And "they're just movies." Fake horses, so chill. If I'm not allowed to bitch and moan about historical accuracy you horse-lovers need to be quiet, too!

3) ditto. ;]

2. They were too REAL horses!! *SCOWL* With real mouths. And I can so bitch. :P. And you are TOTALLY allowed to bitch and moan about historical accuracy. I do it myself on occasion. :) Of course, i reserve the right, if in a cantankerous mood read: often ;) to rebut your argument on the basis of context or storytelling. *WEG*

But the poor horsies. :(
