toilet update
May. 4th, 2005 04:59 pmbecause I know you care.
Called and invoked the City website and the manufacturer's website and got a slightly better price, with seats thrown in. Still nowhere close to the city price, even after rebate, but oh well. This also assumes that the translation between the place I called and the place J is going to pick the toilets up functions effectively. (But I liked the guy I spoke to: "Your sister [she's my cousin, but whatever] called and they gave her one discount, and I gave you another discount 'cause I like you better. Just go and they'll apply the same discount. Don't say anything.")
I'm assuming it's all worth it. This is the low-flow toilet Consumer Reports liked best in all the world, after all.

Date: 2005-05-04 09:39 pm (UTC)Women, IMO, are more likely in -some- respects to get better service than men in those sorts of places. Most of the guys I know that work in supply houses aren't really biased against women (though it may sound like it listening in on the conversations). But deep down inside, they're just big bundles of hormones that want you (women) to like them (men), and there's a very primitive little voice that says "give woman good price, she like you". Nowadays that voice wins out over the other one that says "woman don't know nuttin', charge her lots o' dough".
And they'll carry your stuff out for you.
I dunno...maybe it is still sexist. But it works in your favor.
I only get discounts in supply houses by invoking the holy words "I have an account here" (or sometimes, "I'm picking up stuff for X; HE has an account here"). Smiling at the big bearded guy does not work for me.
And I gotta haul my own stuff to the truck.

I'll post pictures of my house sometime soon, though they might be more frightening than reassuring (given that we're going on 5 years now...)
