Well pariah_ink has posted it so it's time for a rant. My aunt has been laid off from her job, some three weeks after her husband, my uncle, was laid off from his, and roughly 2 months after my uncle underwent successful cancer surgery. They've both been doing excellent work for their respective firms for I don't know, 10 years at least. Whisk! Door's over there. Don't let it hit you in the ass on the way out.

Kindly note that these are some of my favourite people in the whole world. They are intelligent, talented, kind, funny, incredibly generous people who most emphatically do not deserve to have this happen to them. I have every confidence that they will find something else -- unfortunately the job market is not kind to highly qualified late-50-something jobseekers.

I am ANGRY. Also frustrated, because there is nothing I can do about the situation, and I HATE that.

I wish to lodge my complaint in the strongest possible terms. Consider yourselves put on notice. One more slip up and I intend to transfer my custom to an alternative service provider.

As I have outstanding issues with universe myself, I feel for you. I don't know what's worse: people crapping on you or people crapping your family.

This may not help at all, but I felt vindicated when I quoted this gentleman in a recent article on employee loyalty I wrote:

Herbert Hess, president of Toronto-based recruiting firm Hess Associates, says the inclination of workers to stay put may have less to do with loyalty and more to do with a lack of mobility, noting job growth in Canada of late has been in service areas, not high tech.

"Over the last two years, the level of employment in the IT and tech area has decreased dramatically, so moving to another firm on an average of between seven months and 1.5 years is no longer possible," Hess says.

He notes the nature of the relationship between worker and employer has changed significantly over the past decade.

"About 12 years ago there was a change in loyalty and commitment between employers and employees," he says. "Previously, if you did a good job the company would employ you for life -- it was a mutual understanding between employers and employees."

But then companies started downsizing employees almost indiscriminately, which completely changed the dynamics of the relationship. Hess says that’s where the "loyalty" between both parties ceased to exist.

"The companies started it, and not the employees. And recently it is the companies that are complaining about the lack of employee loyalty," he says.

"As soon as the opportunity level increases dramatically -- and it will fairly soon -- then the apparent loyalty level will decrease just as dramatically. Keep your eye on the marketplace and form your own conclusion."

Please see me letter to God, written yesterday. I seriously disapprove of the recent treatment karma has been handing out to my parents-by-osmosis. I tender my objection in the strongest possible terms. To whit: this sucks.

That said, Jen and I talked about the happenings over beer and baked brie last night--we are inclined to entertain the possibility that this might be a downpayment on good karma.

It had better be, is all I can say. Grrrr.

Yes, it's things like this that make me inclined to fall back on my wholly rational, sceptical, suspicious, godless side. Your explanation is certainly the only possible alternative.
