Genetics is so much more interesting and cool than high school/introductory university biology class makes it seem.

oh, I ALWAYS loved genetics, even in high school. Though the fact I showed my VeryDumb teacher up on some of the genetics probs we did MIGHT have something to do with that....

I still think I'd like to someday learn more about horse genetics and apply it to breeding....

My kid is only in the first year of high school, but when something that smelt of genetics came up in her bio book she pricked up her ears and was disappointed when it didn't go any further. But then perhaps that's because we have a friend who is a geneticist, and told us all kinds of exciting factoids when she was last here.

When I learned about the very basics of genetics and the ways in which it applied to everyday biology in class it was whole years after I had gleamed about as much knowledge from sci-fi novels, the intellectual equivalent of reading it on the back of a box of cereal. Then I did some reading outside of class, Stephen J. Gould and a couple others, which were much more interesting... if not more instructive.

Took a while for me to be interested in what they were teaching in classes but eventually when I had Mrs. Cashore it seemed much more interesting. She did her masters work studying some bacteria that they were trying to design to clean up water from the Nigara river... so much more interesting perspective.

That is cool!

A girl can get only so interested in Punnett squares, IMO.

Oh, too bad. But hopefully she can find out more on her own!

I am constantly learning new and intriguing things about it. Yesterday it was Fragile X syndrome. Complicated and fascinating!

I know NOTHING about horse genetics -- let me know what you find out!

You didn't take first year bio at McGill where we put those Punnett squares to use with fruit fly breeding experiments! Blech! But it was still fascinating!

OH YES I DID. The lab component was fun, I have to admit. The lectures? Not so much.

I maintain that my group bred ether-resistant fruit flies.

Hm, I must have missed you seeing you in the lectures (not surprising, considering how many people were there). Re: boring lectures - it might have had something to do with the terrible lecture manual in first year. I found genetics pretty interesting, but being more chemistry focused, I was more interested in the molecular biology and molecular genetics courses offered in the later years.
