So the gas guy did come, and last night I cooked dinner in my FULLY ARMED
AND OPERATIONAL Death Star kitchen. It was not up to Helen
standards, but it was cooking, and I did it. Am proud. [livejournal.com profile] raithen,
I took your advice and made beef curry. (With Patak's
Madras curry paste and no veggies besides onions -- still, it's the first
cooking I've done in my own kitchen in 11 months, must ease in gradually.)

Funny story about the washing machine. *cough* Turns out it was working
just fine -- it just takes several minutes after you push the button to
think things over before it actually starts letting water in. It took John
and both Hooligans to figure this out, and meanwhile my dryer has been
taken out of its nook -- they are a bit concerned that they may have
connected the hoses back up the wrong way around. Still, I have every hope
that I'll be able to do laundry tonight, which would be nice. Would've
been nice if the manual had mentioned this, I feel.

The IGA on the corner seems to be making a bit of an effort to cater to
the green-if-it-isn't-too-much-trouble crowd, in which I include myself --
they had among other things canned organic Ontario tomatoes (at three
times the price of regular), some of which I bought. Warm glow of virtue.
(I try to go by the rule of thumb that if you have to choose between local
and organic, go with local* -- unfortunately it's not always that easy to
tell, and some stores are shockingly bad about stocking Ontario produce,
considering it's the height of the season and we're less than an hour's
drive from the best farmland in the province.) Along with groceries I
bought the super-duper laundry detergent for high efficiency machines, as
instructed by the manual (and Seventh Generation dye- and fragrance-free,
at that). Expensive but my skin is picky enough that it's probably worth
it.

This time tomorrow I'll be on the plane!

*ETA: although this guy reckons local vs. organic is a false dichotomy
