Of all the food names in which the food is attributed to another country or culture whose members never use that name -- English muffins, French toast, Canadian bacon, and so forth -- I think the weirdest has to be "pâté chinois". If you don't know, that's French for "shepherd's pie". I'm reasonably certain that China has never heard of such a thing. I mean, at least we eat Canadian bacon (or as we Canadians like to call it, "back bacon") in Canada.

Aha! Wikipedia has some thoughts on the matter. Naturally.

Off to see if my Chinese pie is ready yet.

My favourite is "American Cheese" (known to us as the more apt - perhaps - "processed cheese") ... because surely the cheese you want named after your nation is the creepy, preservative-laden, hyper-processed, plasticised kind.

I've never heard of Chinese Pie...how interesting.

And after checking that Wikipedia entry, now I'm hungry. :-)
