I was told the story of how Canada came to get heavy water in my radiochemistry class, but the details were a bit fuzzy. A book to read, if I can find it for cheap (the library has it, but reference-only -- still, one of these days maybe I'll make it up to Yonge and Bloor for a few hours): Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy, by Per Dahl. (A few Abebooks sellers have it for about $25 US, so I might do that one of these days.)

In the meantime there's a good intro to the topic here.

Joseph Heller's sequel to Catch-22, Closing Time, also deals quite amusingly with Heavy Water.

I find it slightly disturbing that I KNEW that it was you who commented as soon as I saw the note that there was one comment on electricland's post....

Because no one else would comment about Heavy Water or because no one else would comment if I had?
