October 2:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had Scotch pies. Not nearly as good as the premade tortierre, which, when you consider the relative merits of French and Scottish cooking, is not surprising.
Dan has assembled Jen's linen cupboard, absent the shelf pegs, which John will buy.
The Whirlpool guy came and replaced the door on Rob's clothes washer and set it running. One more run as a test, but he thinks it'll be fine.
John narrowed in on Jen's shower, stopped the leaking, called Gingers who said that the diverter was probably the problem and will give him another. Which means he's off to the hinterlands once again. He also fixed a small leak and organized tools.
Cheers, Helen
October 3:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had two kinds of fish cakes--salmon and celery, supplied by Neil along with lemon dill mayonnaise, and cod and potato supplied by the Newf fish shop--and salad.
John installed base plugs and covers. Dan installed the shelves in Jen's linen cupboard and started framing the sewer stacks in the basement.
Cheers, Helen (I'm slipcovering; we are a hive of cottage industry.)
October 11:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had frozen pizza--which I cooked because otherwise it would have been hard on the teeth.
Dan boxed in the sewage pipes in the basement, for reason of aesthetics and sound-proofing.
John fixed Jen's bathtub drain.
Over the weekend, Jen grouted most of Rob's bathroom--using her patented system, John talked to Gingers about the diverter in Jen's bathroom shower and put in transom windows. He also put back the beer fridge because Jen's fridge isn't coming until Friday.
Cheers, Helen
October 12:
Today for lunch, Calypso, Dan, John and I had various permutations of Swiss Chalet.
Dan has been having a fascinating time glazing windows. John spent a very short amount of time majoring in minors.
Cheers, Helen
October 13:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had crab quiche and salad.
A little late, but thanks to Rob's harassing Jen's fridge arrived a little after 1:00 pm.
John worked on wiring for said fridge and on the light at the foot of the basement stairs. He went to Rona. Dan is fixing the storm windows and learning how to cut glass.
Cheers, Helen
October 16:
Today for lunch, John and I had salmon kebobs. Dan went to mass.
Dan worked away in the basement restoring storm windows. John installed a switch and receptacle in Rob's second floor bathroom. And went food shopping. He will tackle the gremlins in Jen's bathroom water system this afternoon.
Cheers, Helen
October 17:
Today for lunch, John, Dan and I had eggs Benedict and asparagus.
Dan worked on storm windows. He also cut himself with the exactor knife--not mortal nor maiming--but bled a whole lot. He has now gone back to work where he will put some duct tape over the bandaid.
John explored the intricacies of the basement wiring, and tested Rob's third floor toilet and fixed Jen's bath plumbing by taking out a washer. Seem to be OK. But you never can tell, because as soon as he walks away from them . . .. He also fixed Jen's TV.
Cheers, Helen
October 23:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had club house sandwiches.
John and Dan worked on storm windows--paint, measurements, etc. John fixed furnace switch and installed lights in Jen's bedroom and hall. That's all, folks.
Helen
October 24:
Today for lunch, John, Dan and I had pork schnitzel, scalloped potatoes and salad.
Dan fitted storm windows for Rob's bathroom and prepared for painting.
John wired Rob's TV to cable and in the exercise added two channels to Jen's TV: Vision and WNED, which are both good. Robin will have to delete herself what she doesn't want. (Isn't the Parliamentary channel fascinating?) John also installed a light in Jen's bedroom. He's gone off to Rona again.
Helen
October 27:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had chilli with tostitos.
Dan fit two storm windows. He said not hard; just measuring and cutting. Speaking of same, I muttered about slipcovering. John was working on Corymeela stuff.
Cheers, Helen.
October 30:
Today for lunch, Dan, John and I had tuna fish casserole with a garnished slice of tomato.
Dan was the Captain of Industry, because John did not show up--being making phone calls about estates, insurance, etc.
Dan finished the storm windows in Jen's bedroom and should be able to "throw up" the north and south storm windows in bay.
Cheers, Helen
October 31:
Today for lunch, Jane, John, Dan and I had udon noodle soup, with tempura garnish.
Dan has spent a frustrating time putting up three storm windows. Done but not without a lot of time shaving wood. And perhaps a few oaths. Dan's buddy Josh came by last night and made some remarks about the state of our knives. John got up early to put out garbage and at 7:30 am I asked him what he was doing sharpening knives. Shame. Maybe I should take a few lessons.
John has spent some frustrating time looking for whatever wire connects the porch light. Will all come together in Chapter 2.
Happy Birthday, Robin,
Much love, Helen.
