This is odd: U.S. Department of Defence claims Canadian coins with RFID transmitters in them have turned up in the pockets of various contractors.

I'm not clear who they think did it, or why, or how, or why they've chosen to make this public. But it's odd.

Americans are weird. Also, I have to believe that any Canadian spying on US defence contractors would understand that Yanks normally dump Canadian change PDQ. Of course, maybe the Canadian mint has decided to track us all... *checks her loonies and toonies* Um, no, no transmitters here - do you think maybe they were confused by the Poppies on the Remembrance Day quarters given out at Timmies?

Or maybe Timmies has decided to track their customers... planting transmitters in the special coins to find out where they go... Huh. That almost sounds plausible. Maybe we should tell everyone and see how far the story travels...?

Maybe they aren't targeting U.S. Defence folks at all but are just tracking y'all. Or more specifically the life of a coin. How far does an individual coin go? how long before they stop being used as tradeable currency and find their way into sofa cushions or piggy banks?

I mean really, why would anyone spy on the U.S. Defence department? Even THEY don't know what they're doing so how could any outside agency hope to? The average Candian citizen, on the other hand, is an enigma. Even your own government is asking, "wait so we're in North America but we're not American citizens? That can't be right. We look similar."

Oh! Oh! Oh!

"In Soviet Canuckistan, your pennies watch you!"

I've always wanted to do one of those, and that one almost fails by actually being sensical on all counts, i.e. an actual joke, therefore not part of the post-Smirnovian running gag.

It will appear somewhere as a headline to this news item shortly.

For what its worth, RFIDs freak the shit out of me. If someone sold a portable stormbringer (EMP pulse generator) that could disable them or something, I might be the market.
