In among various bits and bobs and boxes from Granny's apartment, we recently came across a stash of knitting needles. I have just sorted and catalogued them all in my Ravelry account and it took, ooh, about 2 hours. There are a LOT. Mostly in smaller gauges -- we're going to have to start knitting stuff for babies. The grand champion is 17 2.75-mm double-points, but as those come in sets of 4 or 5 it's actually not as impressive as the 16 3-mm straight needles (in 3 different lengths, but still). Smallest is a set of 2-mm double-points. Largest is a pair of 7.5-mm straight needles (Jen has a pair the same size, in case we should happen to need two). And there is a lone 5.5-mm circular needle, in a rather fetching pale green.

So the next question is, what on earth do we keep them in?

I don't knit, so I don't know what proper care for knitting needles entails, but what immediately comes to mind is either a jar (like one would keep pens and pencils in) or a soft, roll-up kit like you might see for a manicure set, or scalpels, or art supplies, things like that. They're ideas, anyway. :)

Old scotch tins (didn't the laphroig (sp?) from Mexico come in one?) work GREAT for the long needles. Elastics to group by size.

The plastic craft boxes you can get work for the double points, though I like to put each size in a ziploc baggy with the size written on before I do anything else. THe rollup bags elissa suggests are also excellent for both -- iffn you want to spend money, the knit shop and michaels etc will have gobs of suggestions. Look on ravelry, too (I'm the same username there, but fail miserably at DOING anything there. *sigh*).

Oooo, how exciting!

Well, the straight ones are neat when kept in a vase. That's what I'm starting to do. (Though, I'm still looking for a handy and creative way to store my eensy crochet hooks, since those are much shorter.)
