Ah, memories!
Apr. 22nd, 2010 12:53 pmMy first year at McGill, a long long time ago now, there was a student referendum to rename the Student Centre after famous McGill alumnus William "Captain Kirk" Shatner. (I voted Yes, as all right-thinking persons should.) It passed by a narrow margin, but the university administration vetoed the name change and the building was not renamed.
At least, on the outside.
Since the student society owned the inside of the building, it is officially(ish) the Shatner Building on the inside and the University Centre on the outside.
Now, I see, Facebook wants Capt. Kirk for Governor General. If history repeats itself, I imagine the government will smile tolerantly on this and ignore it.
(I have neither a McGill icon -- not really surprising -- nor a Captain Kirk icon. Shame.)
