My desk is tidy. TIDY I TELL YOU! TIDY!

There's a whole square metre or so of empty deskness. I filed client comments, I made folders I should have made months ago, I threw away forests worth of obsolete storyboards and screen shots and emails, I rescued a whole pride of paper clips. I moved nearly all my project binders to the bookshelf by the wall (not an ideal situation as I refer to them constantly, maybe I'll get the couple of current ones out of purgatory... I'll see how it goes).

The only remaining blot on the proceedings is my STC magazines, which don't have a home (I'll go to reception tomorrow and see if there's a magazine file I could use) and a couple of random items I suspect I'll never use. Wait. OUT THEY GO! (OK, I dumped the music company flyer on Wendy's desk, maybe she can add it to the freelancer database or something.) And some courier slips, which I should also take up to reception. And a couple of business cards. Aside from that, I'm golden.

I should mention here that I'm notorious for having the messiest desk in the company, so this is especially sweet. Here's hoping I will feel less claustrophobic, boxed-in and panicky as a result... and that it will last.

Now if only I could manage the same for my apartment. I've backslid badly.

My desk will now have to be the messiest

I usually think I know where everything is, but I'm missing a file and it is driving me nuts. My office was recarpeted and painted last month so I took the opportunity to unclutter too. I went from 2 file cabinets down to one, albeit very stuffed, cabinet. My house is a clutter of books, magazines and other things that need attention. I'm not a rat packer, just easily distracted.

I hear ya. I DO have packrat tendencies (although I try to purge every now and again... like today). Couple this with a huge disinclination to actually tidy anything most of the time (despite the fact that I love the IDEA of living in a calm, orderly environment), and you have a problem. But there's nothing more frustrating than being unable to find something you need.

You know what I collect? Decorative boxes to put things in. Old or new. Mexican, Asian, aboriginal, or purely utilitarian. Most of them are empty.
