Excellent weekend at the cottage. Too short, as always, but I think it was possibly the most sun we've had on a weekend all year, and the trees are actually changing colour in quite spectacular fashion. The 401 actually looked pretty for a change (once the fog cleared, anyway) -- I set off at 6:30 Saturday morning, which you, my dears, will recognize as Way Too Early For Robin, and there was this strange smoky fog (an inversion layer, apparently) until about Gananoque.

Drove Granny to Barrie and she pointed out where things used to be in her childhood, which was cool.

Went for a walk in the woods Sunday; saw two red squirrels (I didn't know we had any, so that was exciting) and ate part of a very sour crab-apple. I love that fall-in-the-woods smell, I don't know any way to describe it other than that; do the leaves smell different because they're changing colour? Quite possible, I suppose. Lamb dinner Saturday night, turkey dinner Sunday night. Mmm, carnivorousness (carnivority?).

Drove down to Toronto yesterday afternoon to say Hi to [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl, who was tidying her apartment. I was all impressed. Managed to avoid the worst of the traffic that way -- I hear the 400 was death, and the westbound 401 was death all the way to Kingston, poor things. The only small blot on the proceedings came from the radio: extreme repetition (I can see the association of ideas that leads to me hearing Stuck in the middle with you three times on separate stations the weekend Kill Bill is released, but I'm confused by the attention given to the G 'n' R version of Sweet Child of Mine and, for that matter, that Burgess Shale song) with pockets of misogynist crap. I was scanning through the dial and hit one station playing what sounded like early Blondie, except that Debbie Harry never sang that badly in her life to my knowledge, and the lyrics were something along the lines of:

I'm a professional woman, got 3 degrees, I throw my weight around in the boardroom, don't get in my way, but occasionally I like to be spanked,

[chorus]
Why don't you
Tie me up and torture me?
which baffled me to the extent that I stayed on the station to see if they'd say anything about it, but no, they swept right on to some icy Brit chick purring:

Client satisfaction guaranteed
We'll do anything to please
So my guess is that it was Bad Porn Plot Song Day on 89.5, whatever that is. Then in Cornwall there was a lovely station promo that went "We know you need new music like a hooker needs penicillin." In short, I'm sorry I ever complained about the week-long obsession with the Britney-Madonna kiss. Bring it back, it seems sophisticated and pro-woman by comparison.

Egad. Definitely time to switch to public radio and world news.

I probably should've thought of that sooner. Sometimes that's my answer... this time I struck back with some Kirsty on tape. I don't know why "Can't Stop Killing You" seemed like the best answer, but it helped for some reason. ;)

He blew into town like a paper sack
In a stolen car with a shotgun in the back
He said "she can't run now, she can't hide
I'm gonna get her back for her lies lies lies..."

You were expecting what from the radio? This is the same medium that spawned Howard Stern... Thankfully not in our country or anywhere that we could hear it. But still, not too much by way of strong females on the radio.

As for the cottage in fall smell, I think it has something to do with the cold. Something almost sharpening about the cold in the air. Although I don't think I could come up with anything close to a reason as to why. I'm sure there is some science in there behind it somewhere but stumped as to what.

It was warm though. Verging on hot. It was lovely. I was kind of sorry the dock wasn't in the water... :P

~rude gesture~

No complaining about the free labour!! :P

Besides, you have to walk like 20 minutes to get out to where you can swim anyways... so what's another 5 minutes from the shore! :D

As to the smell, maybe its not an active smell... instead a lack that allows us to smell what is that during summer but that are unable to smell due to all the other smells?
