In August, after 5 years of procrastination, I finally found a dentist. In October, I got around to making an appointment. I feel so mature.

So this morning I went to the dentist for the first time in over 5 years, somewhat freaked out by the notion, because previous visits to the dentist have ALWAYS involved a cavity at the very least, and after 5 years of neglect I didn't know what she was going to find but I had a feeling it wouldn't be good. (I am paranoid like this in many areas of my life, but it generally takes the form of hiding and hoping the problem will go away.)

She's about my age (this never fails to weird me out, although I should be getting used to it) with an 8-month-old baby who'd kept her up from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. and woken her again at 5 and 7. Despite this she was very nice and didn't drop anything. And I have ONE cavity, behind an old filling that needs to be replaced anyway. This is the only thing she needs to do right now, she says, unless the pain in my jaw continues after it's fixed. The cleaning wasn't even that bad. I'm stunned.

Next up, I should resume the battle to find me a GP...

Congratu-freakin'-lations!

I thought I was the only one who was crypto-phobic about people with authority over my teeth.

I think the whole "good kids don't get cavities" propaganda has created more than a few adults who feel like going to the dentist is a little like drug urinalysis.

I think you're right.

She even said "You have very NICE teeth. Stop being so hard on yourself!" when I was doing my self-deprecating bit.

I recently did dental catch up too. My dentist doesn't like me because even after five years, he couldn't find anything wrong.

That's so bizarre - I haven't been to the dentist in years, either - after my old dentist moved I didn't find a new one, and since my benefits at the new job don't kick in till later this month I haven't found a new one yet, but MY jaw has been quite sore lately and I'm not sure if it's the fibro or someting dental-related. I'm kind of freaked to go to one myself.

Glad the news wasn't too bad, though. Could have been worse than one cavity, and now you have that fresh-cleaned feeling again, right? ;)
