Well, I always like his stuff in the New Yorker. Perhaps it will be OK.

That sounds meaner than it's meant. I appreciated the book as a description of the sort of person who doesn't feel emotions, but processes them instead. Not that I'd want to share a beer with any of the people in that novel -- or with Steve Martin, for that matter.

I would like to split a line of coke with Steve Martin in 1977, but that was a long time ago, and I don't think Steve would have been willing to share with a nine-year-old. Shopgirl is a pleasant little book, unobtrusive and inoffensive. 1977 was a long time ago.

This is the sort of book that, the more I try not to be harsh, the meaner I feel.
