Kirsty MacColl 10 October 1959 - 18 December 2000.

I was going to write a short entry about how I became a fan and learned she was dead on the same day, and how much her music means to me, but I spent the time ranting instead. So I will limit this post to:

Damn. What a bloody waste of talent and wit and generosity.

Sometimes it feels like you will never win
Just when you're ready to pack it all in
You tear it all down and start over again
But I'm not down for the first time
Maybe I'll always be the one and only girl for me

I never minded the rain on my face
I knew the sun lived in some other place
I had to go I just needed the space
But I'm not down for the first time
Maybe I'll always be the one and only girl for me

Sometimes your life isn't going too well
Sometimes it reads like a postcard from hell
I've made my mistakes, I suppose you can tell
Some lives read like a postcard
And some lives read like a book
I'll be happy if mine
Doesn't read like a joke from an old Christmas cracker

I had no idea she was dead... I only heard of her about two weeks ago when John (McG) got me to listen to one of her songs - In these shoes - which I adored!

wow.. i had no idea she was dead.

Dead in particularly unpleasant fashion too -- she was on vacation in Mexico with her two teenage sons and was killed by a speedboat driving where it shouldn't have. In front of her kids.

She was absolutely brilliant (isn't that a great song?). We must get together some time and I'll lend you more of her stuff...

i just added Kirsty MacColl to my interests. i saw that Terry Pratchett was another one of your interests ad i was going to ask you if i could borrow a book or two, but then i realzied that Mary Jane has a few herself so I'll borrow some from off her.

...and.. that is a horrible way to die.

I am still so sad about her passing. What a fabulous talent. What a memorable voice. What a sad end for her family to witness.

Tropical Brainstorm is one of my favorite albums and of course her star turn on the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" is classic.

Oddly enough though, the other stuff of hers I've heard doesn't do it for me. My old keyboard player is the opposite. He likes her more folky stuff and can't stand Tropical Brainstorm.

I didn't really get into her until after her passing either. Though I labored under the impression she was still alive for a week or so before I found out.
