Mar. 2nd, 2004 07:13 pmSo I have been trying but failing to understand the situation in Haiti. I'll keep at it, but the stories just depress me.
Work is better. I still need a new job in Toronto, but it's better.
Weekend with L was great, in a no-pressure rambling-around chatting and discussing the meaning of life way. She arrived on the 9:00 train at 9:30 (fairly typical for Via) and we went off to the Claremont for sangria and much food and chat until around 11:30 we noticed we were both exhausted (yes, we are old) and went home to sleep. (I love that the Claremont is 30 seconds from my front door.) She pounced instantly on my copy of Sunshine.
Saturday: made muffins (from a mix, but it counts), read the paper, went shopping (I got a thoroughly delightful shirt from Mimi & Coco that I proceeded to wear all weekend). I had to briefly go in to work to fiddle with PowerPoints, which rather buggered up our plans to go see ROTK at 4 p.m., but we made it to the later show after wandering around and eating poutine and steamies (L is the 2nd person in 2 weeks to have discovered that steamed hot dogs are the junk food of the gods while staying with me -- and hey, they have coleslaw!). Also failed to see Lost in Translation, which was the original plan. Oh well. Another time.
Sunday: went to the Botanical Gardens to see the butterflies. I love the butterflies. They do my soul good. Had to go in to work again after L left, but not for long, and then I went over to Kelly & Jean's for the Oscars. Which I enjoyed very much indeed -- we drank kir and mocked. Catherine and I cheered when Angelina Jolie said she was there by herself (hah! finally, a comeback for those intrusive "why are you single?" questions). I thought Keisha Castle-Hughes was adorable. Jack Black and Will Ferrell were inspired (if anyone comes across a clip of their bit, please let me know...). I loved Alison Krauss's performance, but I thought Annie Lennox wasn't in especially good voice -- I was really nervous for her, I kept thinking she was going to mess up. The other two songs were by far the most entertaining.
I was pleased that ROTK won so much stuff, but was it really better than every other movie in every category it was nominated in? And no Eowyn in ANY of the clips. Hmph.
But most importantly, Les Invasions Barbares won! (Kelly said "I notice they didn't mention that this is the third time Denys Arcand has been nominated in this category. Hmph.") There was much screaming and yelling for joy.
Party this Friday. Perhaps this with
moonlightjoy Sunday. I have to exercise.
ETA: L borrowed Sunshine, Fast Women, Witches Abroad and The Silver Pigs. She has never read ANY of the latter three authors! Shocking! Heee.
