No morning pages or yoga, but I slept for a change so it was all worth it. Thanks, Be Good Tanyas, you make great lullabies! (Window open helped too, although I think I've finally killed one of my African violets in the process.)

Caught the tail end of an interview with a survivalist who lives north of Toronto. He said something about how we haven't had a war on North American soil in recent history so most people don't believe it can happen here (apropos of what I'm not sure, I missed that part).

I tend to disapprove of survivalism as of most extreme reactions to things. I think it's extremely paranoid and also very pessimistic. I was wondering, though, is it an exclusively North American phenomenon? Or are there also Europeans and Asians out there stashing away canned food and radiation suits in bunkers? They certainly have cults, so I don't see why not. Would research this but, oh yeah, I'm at work...

Was also reminded of a minor event in my childhood... it was at Kestrel Manor school so I would've been 7 or 8, our headmistress was telling us about World War II and how Hitler wanted to eradicate everyone except people with blond hair and blue eyes. (I was one of about three blue-eyed blondes in the entire class... everyone looked at us, I remember feeling uncomfortable and vaguely guilty.) She repeated that just so we could be sure. Then she read us a passage about the effects of an atomic bomb. Then everyone went out to play. I felt sick, so I stayed in. Maybe some people never get over that intense, sick, terrified feeling. Maybe that's what drives them to do everything they think is necessary to protect themselves. If so, I understand it... but it's a child's reaction, I think, to a feeling of helplessness. Or maybe just one appropriate reaction among many, what do I know?

Um, yeah. That survivalist thing?

I'm scared now. Although I do like the one that says "Strong-willed women OK."

This one's particularly scary....

Survivalist group looking for new members... we are pro-gun, christian, traditional, conservative, pro-animals, and very outdoors oriented. We believe in preparing ourselves and our families for the rise of the world government of the anti-christ. When the day comes where we are faced with life or death we want to be well prepared for our complex militaristic operations against the unholy and anyone who opposes the purging of evil. We practice during week-long trips into the wilderness (2 men to a tent). PLEASE NO WOMEN OR FAMILIES NEED APPLY! We will protect you, but this club is for men only.

I get that sick, intense terrified feeling every time I watch the news. As a reporter, I feel obliged to be up on current events, but they bum me out so much.

I think some people are just different...

I have a cousin who is in the military, he seems happier than a pig in mud... I think I would lose my mind if I had to do what he does... and he has fun doing it. Now what that says about him and what it says about me, I don't want to hazard a guess. My point is not everyone feels all that comfortable in big cities, maybe they don't feel comfortable in small towns either. If the place that they choose to be is out in the back of beyond. So what?

Now I freely admit there are some really buck futting crazy people out there but maybe not all of them are nuts. If being out in the middle of nowhere living off the land or running around playing soldier makes them happy or whatever else. Provided they aren't plotting to do something to me or mine then I'm just as happy to let them have the middle of nowhere...
