it'll probably be because the house has collapsed into the giant hole next door. I wouldn't mind so much if my room wasn't right over the excavations and if they hadn't woken me up at 9 this morning with what sounded like a coffee grinder right next to my ear. And this in turn would be an OK time to wake up if I hadn't gone to see the 11:20 showing of The Two Towers with Kate and Dan last night.

Spoilers follow. Don't comment on this post unless you want to be contaminated. )

Anyway it was a good day all around. Had coffee with Dan and got all caught up, then distracted Mummy while she packed to go up north (have to be more careful what I admire, she just gave me a kisii stone chess set -- v. cool), ate lunch, sat around, updated this journal, went to meet Kate at HMV (the Parking Goddess smiled on me but only after quite a bit of driving around, so I was late), then dinner at Sonia and Dennis's. (Rotisserie chicken and chips, yum -- I always get so much protein when I come home for the holidays.) Got a bit caught up with Jo which was nice. Wasn't going to go to the movie but then we started chatting about it and I changed my mind.

Sunday also an excellent day: shiatsu massage, then the '50s couture fashion exhibit at the ROM with Jen (I also hit the James Ossuary exhibit because dammit I was going to get my money's worth out of the exorbitant admission price -- should've snurched the parents' membership card), lunch, shopping (bought exercise clothes in the hope that they will provide more of an incentive to go to the gym than my ratty 10-year-old leggings and giant T-shirts), then 5 hours of Pride and Prejudice and Thai food. Yippee! and likewise Yum!

Anyway, going to post a shameless materialism list and some New Year's resolutions (to be continued), then shower and go find munchies.

well, some mutual interests (Kenya and Kirsty, respectively). My this thing is a timesuck.

So far 2 out of 2 new CD's I've put on skip. Grrrr. Let's hope it's just the machine else I'm gonna have to go back to HMV and argue with them.

OK, this is the big one! May have to come back & edit a bit. I'm working out of my head here and I may be forgetting stuff.

In 2003 I will:
  • Get to work by 9

  • Leave work at a reasonable hour, say 6:30 at the latest, unless there's some real emergency

  • Cook at least 4 times a week

  • Bring my lunch to work at least 4 times a week

  • Go to the gym or otherwise exercise at least 3 times a week

  • Stringently limit the time I spend screwing around on the web, say 1 hour a day max

  • Call or otherwise communicate with my friends and family at least once a month

  • Check my voicemail every day, and answer messages immediately

  • Shed those opinions of myself and others that I cling to from habit rather than conviction

  • Take a pottery course or other creative outlet that doesn't have anything to do with words

  • Honour my commitments

  • Face my irrational fears

  • Talk to strangers

  • Find somewhere to volunteer, and do it

  • Spend money only on things I truly want

  • Tell people I love them more often

  • Go to Scotland

  • Visit Heidi & Rock (March?), Zac & Christine, Siobhain & James

  • Look for a job that lets me contribute something more important to the world than just helping multinational pharmacos make more money

  • Do The Artist's Way with Kate

  • Start an online book club with Kate, Joanna, others? (OK this doesn't square well with the fewer-words resolution, but contradiction is so delicious)

  • Keep my apartment clean

  • Give a party

  • Go to the tam-tam

OK, it's a start. Next step is actually to take these and write down WHY I want to do each one. Will be helpful.

1. Baby!

Find out which Discworld girl you are.

2. Beauty
Drove over to the Loblaw's on Broadview and the sky was so beautiful -- overcast except for some pale, pale blue sky at the edges, with red-gold sunlight lighting up the west and reflecting off the wet streets -- I parked and walked to Riverdale Park and just stood for a while, watching the reflected sun through the skeletal trees and the clouds and listening to the traffic on the DVP, which strangely enough made it all more lovely not less. Last sun of the year.

3. Bitchy moment
Had an encounter at a 4-way stop with someone who (a) was on my right and (b) arrived at the intersection first, but who nevertheless kept waving me through. Look, it's nice of you, but you HAVE the right of way, TAKE it. Otherwise it just messes people up. (And don't wave me on, then change your mind and roll forward, then stop and wave me on again, because it freaks me out.)

However, my rage was definitely all out of proportion. There's another resolution: I will keep working at not flipping out over ridiculous small things.

Happy new year, everyone. I love you.
