In a bid to irritate myself (OK, so it's research) I just checked Kidfluence: Why Kids Today Mean Business out of the library. I have read the first 5 pages and I am already very scared. When I have some room on my hold list I'll be getting Brandchild: Remarkable Insights Into the Minds of Today's Global Kids & Their Relationships with Brands as well. I have warned my officemates to expect lots of outraged quoting over the next few weeks.

(Are made-up words and subheads a prerequisite for marketing books, BTW?)

In other book news, I read the following over the long weekend:

The King's Peace, Jo Walton (excellent! -- sorry [livejournal.com profile] crankygrrl; we'll have to discuss one of these days)
Prince Caspian, C.S. Lewis (also excellent)
Death in Cyprus, M.M. Kaye

The last turned out to be tiresome. Our Hero is masterful and enigmatic. Around the middle of the book I assumed that I probably thought this was wonderful at age 15. When I read a bit farther I remembered that I found it just as irritating at age 15 as I do now, because Our Hero is masterful and enigmatic to the point of not giving Our Heroine anything like enough information to stop her behaving in classic Too Dumb To Live fashion. (Spoilery details on request.)

So when I got home I borrowed The Talisman Ring (Georgette Heyer), because let's face it, none of her heroines is ever Too Dumb to Live without a good reason, and if any hero in this book ever tried being masterful and enigmatic he'd learn the error of his ways in short order. And he'd be laughed at.

hmmph.

electricland: (house plan)
I learn to my displeasure that not only did I not get a house update today, but the Hooligans aren't working tomorrow and hardly anyone else is either.

Oh well. My parents and I will be there.

I only got about half what I wanted to get done this week done. Can't figure out if I was wildly overoptimistic or just inefficient. Probably a combination of both as usual. Oh well -- at least I've finished one job that's been hanging over me. And it is, after all, Friday.

On the downside, nobody has yet shown up to move my keyboard tray (it's bolted rather firmly to my desk and I suspect that drilling may be involved or I'd do it myself). Now that I've finally got my act together to complain that it's turning me into a pretzel, it seems rather hard that nothing's been done about it.
