i don't know much about the Canadian charities. however, my inclination would be to support a charity where you can achieve tangible results in the short term.
i have been in medical research, so i know that (at least in the US) that money given to disease charities may support longer term goals or advance the science incrementally, or it could be used for reseaqrch that leads nowhere.
i say teach someone to read or aide a child who needs love and encouragement. for instance.
