R.I.P. my car

The funeral service was held yesterday evening, attended by my aunt and uncle,
pariah_ink,
bryghtboy,
punmeister, Big D and myself.
pariah_ink was official photographer. My aunt and uncle provided the champagne. I had phoned Granny earlier to let her know this was happening and she sent the car her best wishes.

The participants gathered in the alley behind the house at approximately 9:30 p.m.

I brought the guest of honour outside...

...and D distributed champagne. (I thought we needed some sort of book to solemnize the proceedings, so I fetched the 2004 Ontario Road Atlas out of the back seat.)
My aunt then led us in song, and we chatted about the car. It's been in the family for quite some time; in fact it's the car I mostly learned to drive on (since my parents at that time had a very temperamental standard shift that they didn't want to inflict on me), and I well remember Granny taking me to Mount Pleasant Cemetery to get used to driving it.
pariah_ink and D once drove all the way to the cottage in it on a G1 licence with Granny asleep in the back seat. It has been a good and faithful friend in the three years I've had it; the only time it gave me any panic was the time H and I drove to Ottawa in it and the transmission line sprang a leak. I noticed it getting softer and softer on the acceleration, and was concerned, but didn't really freak out until we got to S and J's house and was unable to finish parking because I had no reverse gear. We got out of the car to see transmission fluid all over the road. Aside from that, it's treated me extremely well.

Then we all poured a ceremonial libation on its hood, and I drove it around to the front of the house and cleared it out and patted its roof farewell for the last time. They're coming to get it today.
Farewell, car. You were a good car and I'll miss you.

Date: 2005-01-11 03:05 pm (UTC)Oddly enough, it even looks somewhat like my now-ex-car (it was a silver Plymouth Acclaim), so I can tell you, having just been reminded, that it's genuinely painful to give up a car that served you well. You have my sympathy.
You also did a really wonderful thing with donating it.
