Jan. 14th, 2005 05:37 pmOMG DUN JAYWALK!!!!111!!!ONE!!
Not sure what all the fuss is about, actually. I jaywalk. If I get hit by a car, I will deserve it. Of course, given the average level of driving skill in this town, I could as easily get splattered crossing the street legally, but that would be OK, because it wouldn't be my fault. Or something.
Hm, I should post and tell him so.
Not a very productive afternoon, this...

Date: 2005-01-16 05:11 pm (UTC)I'm always bemused by pundits who complain about the city's cyclists, or drivers, or peds.
The problem isn't the mode, the problem is self important assholes who disobey road rules--rules which are meant to improve and balance and make predicatble the flow for everyone--and in the process (this is the important, _asshole_ part) create dangerous chain reaction situations down the line.
Drivers and cyclists who run stop signs when there are people or other vehicles who have waited to cross the intersection. Pedestrians who charge across busy streets without waiting for a break in traffic, when legal crossing is close at hand, and (my pet peeve) pedestrians who cross with an advance left turn green at a busy intersection, even though the red hand is up, forcing cars turning left legally to jam on the brakes; they're all from the same rectal tribe.
It's not whether or not they're taking chances, who cares if they get run over? Its that the other people who are trying not to aid in their ambivalent suicides are also put in dange--braking suddenly, being forced to swerve in to another lane--by their actions.
Whew. Thanks for the space to rant.

Date: 2005-01-17 02:38 pm (UTC)That said, I will continue to jaywalk as and when I deem it safe. This includes not stepping into the road when a car will have to jam on its brakes to avoid me.

Date: 2005-01-17 05:15 pm (UTC)In Montreal, one learns relatively intelligent jaywalking, where one waits for traffic to be of an appropriate level before stepping out. In Toronto, the rare jaywalkers (heck, crosswalk-crossers too) often step out without looking, because they "think" it's clear. It's a world of difference.
