Interesting post at Lean Left on witholding "futile care" when the money runs out.

I entirely agree that it is slimy and hypocritical to champion Terri Schiavo's case while making many other laws that make a mockery of the "culture of life." But as this post points out, let's maybe not get carried away here.

my favoritist law professor in the whole world ever, Dr. Ortenlicher, was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor recently making this same point. I think it was CSM. I have to go back and check. But we discussed this at length in my Law & Health Care class.

It's an interesting question. I was wondering last night how/whether the same question would play out in Canada -- obviously we don't have the same "when the money runs out" question, but we also obviously have limited healthcare resources. I don't recall hearing about any similar cases here, so I guess the options are (a) it doesn't happen, perhaps because taking the more commercial relationship out of the equation changes things, (b) it happens, but it doesn't get much publicity.

There was a bit in the paper this morning with an ethicist saying that the Schiavo case probably wouldn't happen here.
