House update
Sep. 19th, 2005 01:43 pmfor those of you waiting with bated breath... today, we move backwards through time!
Moderate success with DirectEnergy (contractor will call within 48 hours to set up a meeting to come and do an inspection and quote on running a gas line up to the 2nd floor kitchen) and Enbridge (someone will call within 10 business days, ditto, ditto, ditto turning the meter 90 degrees so it faces south). Oy. Seriously, these people need help with their websites, voicemail menus, etc. Apparently some people would just have called a contractor. As far as I'm concerned, if it has to do with the gas, it's the gas company's (companies') problem -- do they want me blowing up their equipment? No? Well, then.
My aunt reports:
Weekend was wedding stuff, hence the spiral ham. Which, come to think of it, I did not eat. But it looked really good. Anyway, my uncle did a little work on the house on Saturday (electrical). Fingers crossed for the electrical inspection, because...
See, I got all anxious about moving, which is now happening in a week and a half. (I'm up to 17 boxes packed. All my books are done, anyway. It sounds impressive, but the place really doesn't look that different, and I'm sure I will shortly be entering the pit-of-despair I'll-never-be-finished phase of packing.) Sent a long list of things that it would be nice to have happen in the meantime, like walls.
Wednesday:
I regret to announce that there was no Tuesday report. Monday was off, since we have moved to a Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule (today notwithstanding). Saturday we ripped down more ceilings and collected what felt like hundreds of pounds of rock wool, all in preparation for the spray foam insulation guys.
I continue to veer randomly between quiet confidence and hyperventilating panic. Oh, and I picked up some paint chips.

Today for lunch we had--surprise--spiral ham sandwiches.
The electrical inspector is coming tomorrow between 10 and 12. Dan and John are double checking everything and running wires. Some discussion about T-straps to protect the plastic plumbing, and collars for the sewer pipes.
Robin, congratulations on your persistence. Of course the gas company thinks you're important.
Cheers all, not off to Barrie until 3:00.

Today, we had crab quiche and cole slaw, with warmed-over quiche Lorraine as seconds.
About the readiness for next week end, it's 'iffy:'
- If the elecrical inspector comes on Monday and everything upstairs is OK
- Then John can ask the insulations guys to come Wed/Thurs. It will take 2 days. If they can do it then.
- If that is done, then John can order drywall, to be loaded through the front third floor window, and then he has to order a crane to hold the stuff up for installation.
- If that is done, Robin could load her stuff into the second floor next weekend. There is very little room in the basement and more stuff in there would slow down work. Also, work ont the second floor would be slowed down if there's a lot of shifting to be done.
On the non-iffy, the drywall is being put up to accommodate the pedestal sink. I will go over next week (except Monday, when I'm helping admit Mummy to a home in Barrie) and sand, not strip, pieces of wood and keep Dan company. (My conversation will not be as scintillating as David's, but I'm nicer.)
David will be working on Sunday, not Saturday (wedding); so I suggest heavy moving wait until he is there.
Cheers, Helen

Today, we had two kinds of cheese sandwiches: fried with ham and cheese; and grilled, with tomatoes and dill pickles.
Dan is completing the sound insulation on the second floor.
John is applying for the electrical inspection, which, he says, is complicated.
Your friend, Helen
Wednesday:
Today, we had tuna salad sandwiches, cheese and fruit and the company of Jane S--and Dennis who was working.
Dennis has finished plumbing the bath and toilet in Robin's bathroom, and knows where the sink is going. He will return next week.
Dan was working on the wooden frame for Jen's bath.
John went to Rona--his fav--and bought plywood for the 3rd floor floor, plumbing fittings and brackets for lights.
Cheers, Helen

Date: 2005-09-22 03:31 am (UTC)I'm not really sure if this is helpful or realistic, but a packing party? A handful or two of friends, a bunch of boxes, food and drink and voilĂ all is packed. It sounds so simple and, yet, is probably not very feasible.
Otherwise, I'd try wrinkling my nose, but it never seemed to help me be all packed when I've moved.
good choice!
Date: 2005-09-19 06:12 pm (UTC)Called the gas company & charged you for that 45 minutes. If Canada's utilities are like the ones in the U.S., that's their first requirement.
(It's not that I'm like, up on my contractor info - I had to make the page for contractor requirements online the other day for the electric co. I work for. ;p)

Date: 2005-09-19 07:17 pm (UTC)Been there. Try doing that with 2000 videotapes as well as books! Why do you think we rented out storage space? There would've been no room to move around in that apt. with all those boxes! ;) Not to worry, it'll all work out and you'll be surprised how you managed to get it all done on time.
