Busy weekend.
Oct. 3rd, 2005 11:01 amI'll let my aunt tell it:
May I just say that the Home Depot containers were the awesomest thing ever. They arrived around 9 on Friday on a flatbed truck, and the guy put them in front of my apartment using a little forklift. My helpers arrived around 9:30 or 10. They took some boxes over to the house and put them in the new storage area under the roof as my mum and I continued to pack madly (I was wrong about how many boxes were left. There are ALWAYS more boxes). We broke for a leisurely lunch (gumbo -- see above) then got back to work, and were basically done by around 4. The guy came back to pick the containers up around 5, and I hung around packing my remaining clothes, doing some half-assed cleaning and waiting for Joanne to come get her futon. My mum and I left around 8 to go back to their place and eat dinner; as we drove along Eastern she said "Look! It's not a quarter to midnight and we're not unpacking a truck!" (Which has been the norm for all our other moves.) We agreed that the containers are the greatest thing since sliced bread and we will henceforth use them for all family moves. Not that I ever plan to move again, thank you.
So I'm installed with family friends just north of Casa Loma (on the same street as the Casa Loma stables, which can be mistaken for Casa Loma in a dim light and were, by Jen). Quite a different routine, but it's going well so far.
Back to my aunt:
I also bought some light fixtures yesterday (Jen keeps looking at one of them and making "vroom vroom" motorcycle noises), and two Tim Horton's Iced Cappucinos met untimely deaths -- probably a good thing, nobody needs that much sugar. We drywalled in Jen's bathroom until the light went. Fiddly, because we had to drywall from the ceiling down to 5 feet off the floor or bathtub, and there was measuring and firring (sp?) and stuff involved. But hopefully Brian the Tile will be able to make a start on one bathroom at least.
I have also fallen in love with my hosts' medicine cabinet. Must find out where they got it.
Hello all,
On Friday, Dan, Dave, Gill and Stuart moved Robin out of her apartment, in Home Depot containers, and boxes. Containers gone to Home Despot. Boxes fit into the knee wall space on the 3rd floor. We had gumbo for lunch.
On Saturday, the noble Dennis finished the roughed-in plumbing for Jen's bathroom i preparation for Brian the Tile. John, Dennis, Sonia and David had lunch at Quigley's. I was sick.
Dave, John and Robin installed greenboard in two walls of the 2nd floor bathroom and installed duct for Jen's bedroom.
Robin, who spent a delightful afternoon trimming protuberant insulation foam with a bread knife, noticed that Wayne the foam had not done the ceilings of the 2nd floor bathroom and kitchen. Therefore, Wayne, who is coming on Monday will do that then. Therefore, Brian the Tile will have to do Jen's bathroom on Monday. Therefore, John will put up greenboard in Jen's bathroom tomorrow, and rough in the door. The 'window' between Jen's bathroom and bedroom will be plastered on the bedroom side leaving a cunning cupboard on the bathroom side.
Dan was at a cottage. Jen was at class. I was in bed but am now recovered (sounds like I'm a sofa).
Cheers, Helen

Back to my aunt:
Today for lunch, Robin, Jen, John and I had crab quiche and broccoli.
Today's crew put up green board in Jen's bathroom. They are looking at the lip around the bathtub, which Brian the Tile is going to scarf in with marble. Also marble in the door frames. (Sounds like they're getting above themselves.)
Jen is having tile conundra.
They are off to Rona.
I must make it clear that the reference to "crapola" in the email of several days ago was Stuart's term. He meant those fiddly little jobs that have to be done but don't give you that deep and satisfying sense of accomplishment such as, say, digging out rock wall.
Cheers all, Helen

Furring: 2 a:the application of thin wood, brick, or metal to joists, studs, or walls to form a level surface (as for attaching wallboard) or an air space. b: the material used in this process.
