Oh, I got To Kill a Mockingbird out of the Parliament branch. Had to stay up till midnight to finish it -- no hardship. If anyone else has never read it and is feeling vaguely guilty about that, as I was, delay no further! It really is as good as everyone says! (My hostess was shocked to learn I'd never read it -- but then she said when she was in teacher training she hadn't read it either, and they had an instructor who RAVED about it to the point of putting her off totally, and then she went to study for a final exam and it was sitting in a paperback spinner next to her and to put off the evil studying hour she thought "what the hell" and picked it up and didn't get any studying done until she'd finished it and was sold from that point on... in other words, she understands.)

But yes. It's great.

One guilt-read at a time

I am having the exact same experience with The Bell Jar. I'll have to put To Kill a Mockingbird on the list!

Hmm! I guess that means I'll have to put The Bell Jar on mine!

I read it when I was thirteen or so on my mother's recommendation. I think I was probably too young for it and/or my English wasn't good enough yet, because I don't remember a single thing about it except that the protagonist was a young girl with a name I'd have thought more fitting for a boy.

:D well, that's certainly part of it.

Actually I had a whole long theory worked out in my head last night about TKaM and how it's all about ideals of Southern womanhood and how they're not all they're cracked up to be. Not that I had this in my head in time for book club, you understand, because that would just be too helpful.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have got as much out of it at 13 as I just did at 32, so there you go.

I finally read that last year and quite enjoyed it. Can't say the same for Catcher in the Rye, which I read the year previous and was very disappointed.

I think TCitR is one of those books that may be best enjoyed in one's teens. I remember all my classmates ADORING it, and I never got around to it until a couple of years ago. Quite liked it but it wasn't the life-altering experience I'd been led to expect.
