"Aspiration" is code for "Nothing you do will ever be quite good enough. So buy our stuff!"

The colleague who sent me that link also tells me that apparently some mothers and daughters are watching America's Next Top Model as a "bonding experience." I hope that means they're engaging in heartfelt discussions about modern North American standards of beauty and objectification, but I have a feeling this is not the case.

The show doesn't objectify women, he says. It sends another message: "When I put on that push up padded bra, I'll look like Naomi (Campbell) or Heidi Klum and it will give me the support I need."

I wonder if VS offers that as an actual guarantee. Because anytime I've put on a padded push-up bra, I just look like a fat white girl in an ugly bra. Not once EVER has it turned me into a tall skinny black gal. If I were a VS customer, I'd use that statement to demand my money back.

that is EXACTLY the quote I glommed onto - and was going to restate. because I'm beautiful and stuff, but dammit, I shall NEVER look like them. Nor, in fact, do I WANT to.

I find it interesting that in OUR house the only one who has remarked on the ads has a Y chromosome. AND dear GAWD I hope he doesn't aspire to look like Heidi or Naomi. Cuz EWWW!!

Hear hear.

It's things like this that make me think most ads are really about making you feel bad about yourself.

Indeed.

Advertising is all about making you dissatisfied with yourself, but it's sad to hear professors of same believing their own hype. Aspiration. Feh.

Yes, I noticed that, too.... Dear me, people. Puns are not punny unless [livejournal.com profile] lawgeekgurl makes them!
