Oh. And. (I feel like a dork adding this to my other comment) Jane Yolen is one of my longstanding Favorite Authors. She wrote one of the better dragon series back when I was dragon-mad and had torn through McCaffrey's Pern in about three months. I can't remember what they're called, but they're kid's books, quick reads.
Also, Patricia C. Wrede is an excellent, if Young Adultish, fantasy/sci-fi/specfic writer. My favorite by her is The Lives of Christopher Chant, followed by Hexwood. They are brain-candy, though.
Heart's Blood, etc., wasn't it? I read those too, they were great.
Haven't come across those Pat Wredes! Must look for them. I know her best from Sorcery & Cecelia (which if you haven't read you really should). And I have Mairelon the Magician of hers. Wasn't that taken by the Dragons trilogy, though.
Do me a favor & remind me about this list if they compile it; I don't recognize alot of them and it'll give me a list to work off of that my wife might like.
Dude, the first three comments pimped Kate Elliott's Jaran (crap!) and called Guy Gaveriel Kay a "master of sexual tension" for Tigana and I had to log out before I burst something in indignation. Sing the highlights for me?
I don't think anyone's much going to put in a list of stuff they hated with a passion, which is a shame because it makes the second half of the title a bit invalid.
