Parents are off at brunch. My plans today: laundry, go for a walk to Riverdale Farm, throw stuff out, possibly rearrange furniture, probably better do some dishes as well. In between, glue self to TV.

I'm not a sports watcher in general, but when the Olympics are on I turn into a fanatic. (Fortunately, CBC seems dedicated to replaying the good bits over and over and over again, so I'm unlikely to miss much even if I try.) Caught the tail end of the Canada-Italy women's hockey game -- which, as several people have pointed out, must've been psychologically tough for both sides. Jen and I were in Gabby's at the time and the score in the top left corner of the TV screens looked like 10-0 (bad enough); it wasn't until they put it up in large print that we realized it was actually 16-0. Ouch. But the Italian goalie did a great job, considering the shots on goal.

Yay for Jennifer Heil! and poor Beckie Scott, although sixth isn't exactly disgraceful.

...oooh, the Canada-Russia game's starting, have to go.

I want to see if there are any new baby animals, and how the piglets are doing.

I used to watch the Olympics when I was younger. I haven't felt the compulsion to watch since .. probably the '84 Summer Olympics in Los Angelos.

I remember the '84 winter Olympics, though. I was sick with croop at the time -- gee, same thing now! sorta -- and it was the year Dean and Torville did Bolera in the Ice Dance competition. And Katarina Witt taking gold in the figure skating. And I think Dan Janssen was speed skating at the time too.

I think it's partly my love for things in neat packages. You don't get much neater than the Olympics (two weeks every four two years? efficient!). I can watch them and not worry about watching any other sports ever unless I feel like it.

It's also pretty cool to get so many women's sports on TV at once.

We started watching the ladies hockey yesterday and then turned it off after about 10 minutes. It just didn't seem like a fair match-up. Yay that Canada won, of course, but it was too hard to watch.

It was pretty painful. As you say, yay that Canada won, but it would be good for everyone if the competition was stronger.

Russia's not getting stomped on quite as badly, but it's still no contest.

You & my wife. She's glued to the tv every free moment she gets - she tapes half of the summer Olympics.

I think Canada is crushing Russia.

Have to say I don't go as far as taping them. I watch what's on TV and that's it. But it's so addictive.

12-0, I believe...
