Canada's women rock.
Feb. 22nd, 2006 05:13 pmActually our men rock too. But today it's (mostly) all about the women.
Three rousing cheers for Chandra Crawford, Cindy Klassen, Kristina Groves, and the short-track skating team! What an amazing day. Shame it's going to be completely overshadowed by how badly the men's hockey team SUCKS. I can see tomorrow's headlines now: CANADA OUT OF HOCKEY TOURNAMENT. Oh, and we won two gold and two silver medals.
Yay also for Brad Gushue and the curling rink and for the short-track speed skaters who qualified for whatever the hell the next round is.
Incidentally, I love the non-Reuter's news reports that go up on the official site from time to time. This morning the first report said that Beckie Scott, on coming in fourth, "despite not winning raced to her fellow team mate to celebrate, showing great maturity and team spirit." Aw.
Statistical note: Of Canada's 18 Olympic medals so far, 13 have been won by women. I think part of the reason I love the Olympics so much is that, unlike so many other areas of life, a win is a win and a hero is a hero. Women's sports aren't shoved aside or deemed inconsequential.

Date: 2006-02-22 10:20 pm (UTC)Did you notice the poll on ctv.ca?
Do you think the media should focus more on Canada's women athletes who are winning the majority of our Olympic medals and less on the men's hockey team?
Yes 4993 votes (81 %)
No 1193 votes (19 %)

Date: 2006-02-22 10:38 pm (UTC)and my email is STILL being pissy, I think, so if you are sending stuff I get it late or possibly not at all. *Sigh*
and who cares about hockey, THAT much. If it was skiing or lacrosse or something and a favorite didn't win, we'd say "Aw, too bad" BUT YAY! to medal winners.
and GO TEAM CANADA!! Let the girls show you the way! so, do you figure Klassen will carry the flag in the closing ceremonies? 4 medals in one Olympics is DAMNED impressive!

Tomorrow night is doable, Saturday night is doable, and you are MORE than welcome to come help with the house. Do email and we'll figure something out!
