Lunch review
Jul. 31st, 2006 01:56 pmSo I've started bringing my lunch to work again as a cost-control and
(hopefully) health measure. My lunches normally consist of:
- leftovers
- 2 mini yogurts
- fruit
Since I'm not cookingmuch (who am I kidding?) at the moment, I
have no leftovers; therefore I'm buying frozen entrees instead. (Ya gotta
start somewhere.) I finally remembered from the last time I was doing this
regularly that if the frozen entree in question is significantly under 300 g
my body will start throwing a temper tantrum towards the end of the day
no matter what else I feed it -- go figure -- which lets out a fair number
of the PC Blue Menu items, unfortunately. But there's still plenty to be
going on with. I thought I'd start keeping track of what I'd tried, rather
than trying to do it in my head, so that I can remember the stuff I like
and cross the stuff I don't like off my list.
Please keep in mind that my standards are pretty minimal and, after all,
these are frozen entrees.
PC Blue Menu Penne with Roasted Vegetables
Stats: 300 g, 320 Calories, 6 g fat, 9 g fibre, 750 mg sodium
Cooking: Microwave for 5-6 minutes
First impression: Smells good! More tomato sauce and fewer roasted
vegetables than on the cover photo, but I can make out red and yellow
pepper and green and yellow zucchini. With grill marks.
Taste: Nice. I'm still not a huge fan of whole-wheat pasta, but I know
it's good for me, and they've cooked it al dente (as opposed to crunchy
which is what I normally manage). A little saltier than I would make
myself, but the veggies are tasty and have some texture to them. The
cheese is actually detectable.
Label amusements: Separate entries for "fine herbs," "seasonings," and
"spices."
Final verdict: Satisfying.
Will buy again: Yes.
Fruit: Peaches (not local yet, alas, but tasty).
Yogurt: Fat-free Yoplait Basket,
remains of Orchard Medley 16-pack, 1 field strawberry and 1 peach. (With
yogurt I just try to go low-fat and no artificial sweeteners -- it's hard
to mess up yogurt -- and this stuff has been very nice. I got a 16-pack of
No Name for the next lot.)
