I am so thrilled about this year's Nobel peace prize. The Grameen Bank is such a brilliantly simple and simply brilliant concept, and it's helped so many people. I hope we don't see the same sort of grouching as we did when Wangari Maathai won two years ago. I'm interested and pleased that the committee seems try and take a broad approach to the concept of "peace" -- the prize doesn't just go to people who try and end conflicts, but sometimes it goes to people who try to address the roots of conflict in the first place.

I used to get a subscription to Ode magazine, and they did a profile on the project, and I was so wowed by the idea. And it truly shows the committe is putting some true thought into who gets the awards, because on the surface, you wouldn't necessarily think that was a peace-making venture.

A couple of years ago I read about a General who was given the job of quelling the violence along the Chinese border with another country (I forget which). He was told he had full freedom to use "any means necessary". He demanded a large budget and lots of troops, and got them.

Then he put the troops to work building schools and other infrastructure for all of the villagers on both sides of the border. The more he built, the less the violence in the area.
