Apparently it's Fashion Week. The most immediate consequence of this for me is that I have to dodge a giant tent in Nathan Phillips Square (the one on the splash page) on my way to and from work. There's also a Barbie-pink fire truck flogging Schick razors (for women, naturally). Occasionally the pink-is-for-girls thing just irks me, and this is one of those times. Because (a) that is just too much pink, a colour of which one can tire quite easily, (b) why do we only get one colour, and that a noxious one? Why not pale green or lilac or burnt orange or silver? and (c) in my darker moments, I speculate that it's not so much pink-is-for-girls as the Scarlet Pink Letter: GIRL COOTIES! Manly men, stay away! Or at least, Pfft... don't bother. Girls will put up with this, but you don't have to.

I am probably assigning way too much intent to the Schick pink fire truck. I dunno, what do you think?

No, I feel sure you've got it dead on. Pink seems to have become code for 'girls only', for men as well as women (until you grow old and can become a Red Hat woman). Given I thoroughly dislike most shades of pink and run a mile from anything that tries to codify my gender, pink and I don't get along too well.

I second, but would add that I think the codification is primarily through laziness on the part of marketers rather than necessarily vile intent towards women. Also that pinks usually go into marketing, which makes this sort of unpleasant nonsense more prevalent.

I wanted to write a book about pink's fall from manly-man grace, once upon a time, but I feel it remains mostly laziness.

I like pink, to an extent... but sometimes I think they just go way overboard.

A pink firetruck? That's just dumb. d:

No: I occasionally get really irked at these things as well. Here's a big reason why: you can buy a pack of disposable razors at the Dollar Store. There's apparently men's razors and women's razors. The only visible difference between them, however, is that there are blue ones and there are pink ones. That's it.

I hate that whole pink thing. I'm not fond of the colour and I hate the association. I get it for girls, but not for women. Lots and lots of little girls really adore pink, but maybe that's because of the marketing hype.

And, I have no use for women's razors. I have always found them to be more expensive, usually that repulsive colour, usually inferior to men's razors, occasionally identical to men's razors. I have no use for some silly "lather" strip. I use a yanker on my legs and found out that I get the best armpit shave dry.
