Hyperbole, n. (1) A rhetorical device of emphasis for exaggeration or effect. (2) Something just about everyone (naming no names) who has read Robin Hobb's stern warning about blogs seems to be totally incapable of recognizing. (Fortunately, however, not everyone.)

Sometimes I think the Internet killed irony. Maybe she should've put an emoticon or two in there.

Sometimes I think the Internet killed irony.

Possibly, although I tend to concur with Ms. Larbalestier that
people have been irony deaf for a Very Long Time.

And thus, sadly, emoticons or disclaimers (a vague disclaimer is nobody's friend are necessary, at times. Mores the pity....

You'd think people would have been tipped off that she was being tongue-in-cheek by the highly formal, old-fashioned tone... Seriously, folks.

I thought it was hilarious!

Indeed. Or, for instance, the opening line.

I thought it was hilarious too! And, you know, sadly rather true on some days.

Two comments: trying to be funny and being funny are not the same thing. Nor does everyone share the same sense of humour; some of us have found Robin Hobb a tiresome gasbag lo these many years.

Bonus comment: this is coming back again now, why?

Not really sure why it's coming back again now -- something clearly set it off.

And I didn't say anything about funny. (Although no, not everyone shares the same sense of humour.)
