Apparently the source of my fruit fly infestation is the bag of forgotten, melty potatoes under the sink.

ohgod.

I really need to develop a better housekeeping system. Whining that it's not my fault because we always had cleaners while I was growing up is not cutting it (and also makes me feel like an over-entitled princess, which I don't think I am, mostly).

For what it's worth, I didn't have any sort of a housecleaner growing up, and I end up with fruitflies from fruit and veg all the time too--believe me, being trained in childhood on how to clean things up is no guarantee of a spic-and-span adulthood. I've decided that it's a mark of how busy and engaged I am with the rest of my life, which almost makes it sound like a positive thing...almost.

When I moved away from Chicago, I had purchased a storage unit to hold my things, believing they'd be there a month, maybe, tops. Two and a half years later, I went back and retrieved the last of it, finally. Among the packed things were the boxes from my kitchen, which included a (now) largely empty potato sack and a box that had obviously been affected by something incredibly horrific. I don't know why I packed a sack of potatoes. Obviously I'd meant to bring it with us, not put it into storage, or else thought that I'd be back soon enough to get it. I had no memory of doing this, naturally, but that did nothing to alter the hideous reality of it all.

So, yeah, I feel your pain. :)

Yeah, I was a slovenly person for ages, but I learned early that I was never to keep any food anywhere but the fridge, and or in glass/metal/plastic containers in the pantry.

We refrigerate everything. Bread, potatoes, onions, carrots; everything. It very rarely goes bad, and since the fridge is tiny, it all works out.

this is a good plan. I am definitely going to have to adopt it for potatoes. (Onions get used, but everything else on your list, not so much.)
