Up and down day today
Mar. 2nd, 2010 10:09 pmThe good: An excellent guest speaker who my boss had invited -- she is the director of the patient education program at a nearby hospital, and they have done just a ton of amazing things and I am now fired up with enthusiasm and ideas for similar things that would work for us. (We poached our newest staffer, who I like very much so far, from her program. So that should help.)
The bad: I am feeling very overwhelmed and avoidy; I have unlistened-to voicemail and unread email and piles of niggly work going back months, and I'm trying to get all this stuff done but new things keep turning up, so I end up taking basically the entire day to make minor changes and format about 4 shortish documents. A lot of the niggly stuff is like that -- stuff I shouldn't even be working on, except there is no-one to delegate it to because everyone has their own stuff. Why then do I end up with it, you may well ask? Overdeveloped sense of guilt and responsibility mostly, I think, plus perhaps a sneaking addiction to being indispensible and valued.
The potentially good: Thanks to the guest speaker and our new staffer and various other things, I am plotting ways of making this all better. Like training and delegating and leveraging new technology and other good things. It won't happen right away, of course, and nothing is going to help with the unread email. Sigh.
The bad: Stayed way too late at work. AGAIN. Is no good.
