Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] life_on_queen!

For a day without a plan, today went surprisingly well. Got up latish because apparently going out drinking on a Friday night no longer works for me (bah). Blue and I went for our usual walk, much nicer than yesterday because the sun was shining, and he really behaved very well; he did see the Chow that he hates, and chased after him, but (a) luckily they were on opposite sides of the fence, and (b) he LISTENED to me and came when I called him! I swear he is actually developing a brain and some self-control in the run-up to his 4th birthday. Can't come soon enough, I tell you.

Then I made pancakes a la Nigella, and they were good. Also, the recipe makes enough mix for 4 batches total, so I can make pancakes effectively from scratch ANY TIME I WANT (in future I may split them up into batches instead of sticking as much as I can into a Mason jar). God, I feel so domestic. (Just as well; I went through a bad patch of not cooking anything at all for a while there, and it was getting old.)

I've been on a Dorothy L. Sayers reread kick recently. (Book post coming.) Just finished The Documents in the Case: unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other. I do like the stereochemistry-solves-the-mystery aspect, and was much struck by the fact that the aether was still around in 1928; still, these do not make up for the general grimness. Anyway, neither Jen nor I seems to have Clouds of Witness or Whose Body? (they may be at the cottage but what use is that?), so we decided to stroll up (with dogs) to the Great Escape on Kingston Road in hopes of finding them. No luck; however, I did get My Family and Other Animals and The Lives of Christopher Chant. Also Biggles Defies the Swastika, because really, when you find Biggles Defies the Swastika in a used bookstore, don't you more or less HAVE to buy it? Jen found a Freddy the Pig book for John. I was much struck by the presence of TWO copies of The Serpent Garden; sadly, no Oracle Glass or Master of All Desires, which are the ones I'm actually missing, but I thought it was encouraging.

And then I made roast chicken and roast vegetables and Jen made pasta with leeks and gorgonzola sauce and steamed asparagus, and we ate. A lot. And Tilde managed to break a wine glass with a sofa cushion. Tomorrow: brunch, choir. My life is so thrilling.
