So yesterday evening I tried to PDF two Word docs; managed that successfully, but the resulting PDFs wouldn't print properly in hard copy. Cursed Word. Cursed Acrobat. Had a moment of sanity and realized that since this had already waited 3 weeks, it could wait some more until tomorrow, and Steph and I got out of the office.

Wandered up St. Denis in search of the Starbucks. Made it as far as Mont-Royal metro then accepted that the Starbucks was likely south of Sherbrooke (a quick reconnaissance into the phone book confirmed this theory). Hopped the metro to Berri-UQAM and there, indeed, was the Starbucks, with P's sister and friend busking opposite it as advertised. Quite lovely -- they have a dramatic setting, the building being an imposing neoclassical library with curved black railings out front, and the music they make is beautiful. (Italian opera, Broadway, ballads, French songs I didn't recognize... I was less whelmed by the show tunes, but "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" has never been my favourite song, and the ballad they closed the set with made up for everything.) Occasionally they had to compete with a particularly loud car engine or some Madonna with the bass turned way up, but such is life, I suppose. Many people walked right past, oblivious, including a couple of young men with headphones clamped to their heads, but lots more people stopped to listen...

...a blind man arm-in-arm with a companion, who guided him to the hat so he could put some coins in...

...a woman from New York, gushingly enthusiastic...

...couples who sat on the steps and cuddled...

...a girl in multicoloured dreadlocks, writing in a handmade notebook...

...a man on a bicycle, who I thought was going to fall off...

Those of you in Montreal, go listen to them some time -- 1700 St Denis, the Bibliotheque Nationale building south of Ontario, a cellist and singer with gold and silver face paint performing between 6 and 8 on fine days. Toss some coins in the hat. They're worth it.

Then I walked along de Maisonneuve and was knocked out by the cherry-popsicle scent of the cherry trees on the vacant lot as you approach Bleury. They've shed about half their blossom but what's left is enough to get drunk on.

And then I saw The Matrix Reloaded (finally); good silly fun, and my respect for Monica Belucci has gone way up, because even if I had a body that good I don't think I could pull off that skanky latex dress with aplomb. I mean... hip ruffles! Poor woman.

Damn cool fight scenes too.

"...a girl in multicoloured dreadlocks, writing in a handmade notebook..."

That, right there, made the scene breathe for me :)

I'll stop by today after work if I can. I'll bring my poet and we'll join the cuddly couplehood collective.

Do they object to having their photo taken? I've a photo assignment due, and I think they'd make an interesting subject...

I shouldn't think they'd object. Tell them Robin sent you!
